A friend sent me this link about another newspaper biting the dust. The last day of the Albuquerque Journal is documented here in this SoundSlides presentation. Isn't this sad? And also interesting that the demise of an old medium is reported in the new medium.

I think this Sound Slide presentation of the closing of the Albuquerque Journal is extremely symbolic of how journalistic rituals are changing and conforming to the effects of new media. I particularly found this presentation powerful because it gave me insight as to how staffers at a city paper connect to the daily processes they carry out in order to inform citizens. Like the changing Cap Times, the Albuquerque Journal is forced to give up the side of its business that produces a tangible product. It is obvious from the presentation that opening up a newly printed edition of a newspaper holds emotional meaning for not only the readers but the staffers who contribute to creating the product from start to finish.
Although the process of gathering news can continue when papers like the Cap Times and the Albuquerque Journal move online, there is obviously something missing when a paper with a long, impressive history has to change its format and adapt to something new.
I agree with Marissa. I also think this video was extremely sad!
Building off of what Marissa mentioned about the changing rituals of journalism, from a news production view I think that the way in which news is gathered for this newspaper will significantly change. Like our talk about gatekeeping, I think that by moving to the Internet the Albuquerque Journal and the Cap Times will have to essentially hand over gatekeeping responsibilities to the public. Some of the responsibilities will still be in the hands of the editors (and hopefully reporters), but it is going to be reliant on the public to chose what story it wants to read. As we saw on the AP site, someone somewhere already chose for the public which stories are the top stories, but there is that 'search' option on the Internet that isn't there in print. The public now has the ability to over rule the gatekeepers and read whatever they are interested in. If the public is willing to search and dig, they can become their own gatekeeper. I think that looking at a dying newspaper in this way, can make it a little less sad and maybe put the hope back into journalism that the public is rational and is able to seek out their own information.
I too found it very interesting and almost ironic that the end of the Tribune (presumably as a result of the internet) was captured sadly and poignantly on, of all mediums, the internet.
However, while it is sad to see people essentially lose a family like that, it is important to remember that technology is a constantly changing landscape and that these types of occurrences are destined to happen. Certainly the newspaper is one of America's oldest mediums and one that has much value, sentimental or otherwise to people, but fifty years from now we could be reading a sob story about the Cap Times Online's last day on the internet because some other type of news media may be available to us.
Again, watching that video, my heart certainly goes out to those journalists as well as newspaper journalists around the country who are losing their jobs, but we as a society are what essentially drove that to happen. New media only succeeds if it is perceived by those consuming it to be better than the old media. Clearly, for better or worse, that is the perception.
